Billboard ROI: How to Actually Measure What a Board Is Worth

Billboard ROI can't be measured the way a digital ad's can — there's no click to count. That doesn't mean it can't be measured at all.

Why the digital ROI playbook doesn't transfer

Digital advertising ROI leans on direct attribution — a click, a conversion pixel, a last-touch model. Outdoor advertising has none of that natively; a driver who sees a board and later visits the store leaves no digital trail connecting the two events.

Trying to force billboard performance into a click-through-rate framework usually just produces a discouraging, misleading number. The right frame is closer to how brand and reach media (TV, radio) have always been measured.

Metrics that actually attach to outdoor

Useful signals include: lift in branded search volume during the flight, redemption of a board-specific promo code or unique phone number, foot traffic near the location during the campaign window (via location data where available), and simple before/after brand-awareness surveys in the market.

Cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) against the board's traffic count is the baseline efficiency metric — it tells you what you're paying for reach, which is the foundation ROI is built on top of.

Isolating the billboard's contribution

Because outdoor rarely runs in isolation, the cleanest reads come from natural experiments: comparing a market running the board to a similar market that isn't, or watching for a lift in a unique tracked channel (a dedicated phone number or promo code) that only the board could have driven.

Key takeaways

  • Billboard ROI needs a reach-media measurement frame, not a digital click-through frame — there is no native attribution path.
  • Track branded search lift, unique promo codes/numbers, and before/after awareness — not clicks.
  • A natural experiment (matched market without the board) is often the cleanest way to isolate the billboard's own contribution.
